Ep14: Part Two - Reclaiming Our Voices, with Connie Greyeyes of Indian Residential School Survivor Society
RECLAIMING OUR VOICES:
In Part Two - Connie & I discuss the intergenerational trauma of day scholars, and residential survivors; and how it impacted families. Indigenous children were removed from their homes like hostages. Many children disappeared while enrolled in boarding schools: many others were beaten and abused psychologically, changing them forever from the children their families once knew.

Not only were there Boarding School survivors but there were also Day Scholars–which aren’t usually recognized. Day Scholars are individuals who attended a federally owned and operated residential school during the day but returned home at night. They suffered many of the same grave harms and abuses as other students at residential schools, including the loss of language and culture.

Connie is a Cree woman who hails from the Bigstone Cree Nation and was born and raised in FSJ BC. She began advocacy work when she started to realize that a shocking number of Indigenous women in her community had gone missing or had been murdered. She began organizing local vigils to support the families of the missing and murdered women and raise awareness, which led her to the steps of parliament. She has advocated for families for nearly a decade and worked closely with Amnesty International on the report, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.”
